Law and Sport working together
Have you noticed that the number of legal issues pervading sport has increased in the last ten years? Well, ten years ago there was probably no such thing as a sports lawyer. Now they seem to be popping up everywhere. However, it is important to distinguish between lawyers who are involved in sport and lawyers who regularly practice sports law.
Michael Smyth of Sportscounsel, a practising barrister, has advised in numerous sports related matters. One example is his assistance to New Zealand Gymnastics. Here he has helped incorporate into their constitution provisions to allow appeals from disputes to go to the newly formed Sports Disputes Tribunal of New Zealand. This work involved formulating a completely new Code of Conduct for the sport, a new disputes procedure and ensuring that all the associated regulations and by-laws were consistent with the new provisions.
Here's what clients have to say:
I just wanted to thank you for the superb job you did for us. Your input and support was invaluable and there is no question that without you onboard the outcome would not have been so positive. Although the issue probably appeared small to you the outcome was so important to our club. The player is now a keen member of the squad.
The things I appreciated most were your accessibility and positive, but honest view of the situation. I enjoyed working with you and definitely look forward to using Sportscounsel in a proactive manner in the near future. I will continue to highly recommend your services to who ever will listen.
Once again thanks mate, You're a gem!

Although I am Olympic athlete I had never had reason to use a sports lawyer before - so I wasn't really sure what to expect. The legal profession is not something you normally associate with sport. However, I was relieved when my questions were answered promptly and in a way which was easy for me to understand. Michael definitely made the issues less complicated that they seemed at first. What I liked best was his easy going manner and his ability to quickly understand the issues involved in my sport. The advice was to the point and very realistic. I would always recommend Michael to others involved in sport who are seeking help from a trustworthy source. He works with style and efficiency and will go the extra mile to make sure no stone is left unturned.
