The Sportscounsel Mentoring Programme

Can you afford to take a wrong turn in your sporting career?

Where do you want to be in 5 years time? In 12 months time? Next month? If you can answer all these questions, how are you going to get there? What strategies do you have? Who is going to help you get there?

Any person will tell you that you need to have a business plan if you want to be successful in business. If you are embarking on a sporting career, shouldn't you have a plan too? If you take your sport seriously, then it is a must.

Why so few sports people have a plan

If a plan is such a necessity, then why do so few sports people have one? The answer is very simple. It is actually really hard to sit down and work out a plan. It involves time and thought and very often gets rejected into the ''too hard basket''.

However, it is having a plan which allows you to achieve your goals in the shortest possible timeframe without unnecessary frustrations. It's a bit like going on a journey without a map. Several detours and wrong turns later you may get to your destination, but you may also get very lost. So why not get directions before you set out and enjoy the ride?

It's all in my head

Most sports people will have goals of sorts but when asked to produce them, the answer comes "they are in my head''. Well, unfortunately, that's no good. The reason is because the human brain just doesn't work like that.

It's like sitting in front of your PC and shouting the command ''print'', and then getting frustrated when it doesn't do anything (unless you have speech recognition!). The human brain is the same. Just as you have to press the print icon on your toolbar to make your PC print, so you have to programme your brain to achieve your goals.

How do you programme your brain to achieve your goals?

Whilst the brain may be a complex part of the body, to programme it is very easy. It simply involves writing your goals down on paper and being as specific as possible. Sounds easy, but for those who have tried, it is actually quite hard to do without practice. That's why many successful business people employ business coaches and consultants to plot the course of their company. By using them as a facilitator they can ensure a successful future.

Goals need to be updated

Due to the shifting nature of life, your goals will change over time. That's why goals need to be updated at regular intervals to ensure you keep on the right track. As a minimum, goals should be reviewed every month and new goals set for the coming month. If you can do it more often that's even better.

We help you achieve your goals

The Sportscounsel Mentoring programme is designed to help you achieve your goals. We do that by acting as a facilitator to enable you to set your goals in a realistic and consistent fashion and then work with you to see how you are going to achieve them. We encourage you to use the respected mind mapping technique to record your goals for maximum results.

The programme is designed not just to look at your sporting goals but also the goals in other areas of your life. We do this to ensure your life is in balance and is an optimum platform to help you achieve your sporting goals. No one aspect of your life can be looked at in isolation.

Tailoring the mentoring programme to suit your needs

Where you take our mentoring package is up to you. It may be that we discover goals that we are able to assist you with or put you in touch with the specialists who can help. Any package can be tailored to suit your needs.

Why should I sign up?

We can think of lots of reasons why you should sign up. One of those reasons is simply to get an edge on your competition. The mentoring programme can be tailored to clubs and governing bodies as much as it can individuals. Traditionally sporting careers are short - can you afford to take a wrong turn?
