Thomas Gilbert - Waterski Champion
Thomas has been winning water ski medals since he was eight years old. Since the age of eight he has won gold medals at every New Zealand National Championships. At the age of 14 he has been selected to represent New Zealand at the Junior World Championships and his goal is to be junior world Champion in 2006. At present he is the number one waterskier for his age in the world - and he is a New Zealander!!
Why Waterskiing?
Clearly waterskiing is not as high profile as, say, rugby, so why sponsor a waterskier? The reason is simple. If you are looking to target the youth market, it is better to choose a sport which is not mainstream. Teenagers like to live dangerously, enjoy extreme and alternative sports. Quite simply, Thomas is going places. Having won lots of National titles already, the future looks rosy. He spends a lot of time in training, some of that time overseas with some of the best water skiers in the world. The dedication is there... it is only a matter of time.
